Anything, Everything - III

Election is the festival of democracy. This festival starts from the announcements of election by the election commission and ends with the formation of the government. Election Day is the very eventful day of the festival. On this day, Voters of the election constituency celebrate the festival by casting their votes to their favorite candidates.  Today i.e. 7th February 2015, is very important day for the Delhi voters as they are going to cast their votes to elect a new government.

Delhi has a very significant place in the heart of every Indian.  This city evokes the memory of the glorious past, freedom struggle, constitution and modern India & its makers. This city has seen many seasoned politicians, political parties and political colors since independence.  The city has witnessed many difficult periods too – war against neighboring countries, emergency, assassination of prime minister  , Weak & unstable central government , coalition government , attack on parliament and in recent past agitation/ movement against corruption . In 2011, Anna with his supports started movement against corruption (for Janlokpal) and that movement, against the wishes of Anna, gave the birth of a new political party ‘Aaam Aadmi Party’ (AAP). In 2013, AAP fought its first election for Delhi assembly and surprising many opinion polls, political pundits and psephologists; AAP not only won 28 seats out of 70 seats but also formed the government with the help of congress. However, that government did not last long and, on the issue of janlokpal, AAP leader & chief minister of Delhi Mr. Arvind Kejriwal resigned from the post. Buoyed by the success, the party contested Loksabha election 2014too but could not make any significant mark. Except Punjab, the performance of AAP was pathetic and it could not even win a single seat from Delhi. However, one positive aspect of the election was that ‘AAP’ could occupy the space in the conscious of Indian voters.

For Delhi assembly election, there are three major parties  in the fray – - BJP, Congress and AAP.  Major fight for this election is between BJP and AAP. Even though BJP is denying the fact that this election will not be referendum on Modi government’s work but truth is that BJP is heavily relying on the PM and central government’s achievement . On local level, BJP has not done any noteworthy work and its vision document for the election not only came very late but also does not offer anything concrete to the Delhi voters. Truth is that, Modi government has nothing much to show as achievement before Delhi voters. It appears Government is still enjoying extended honeymoon period. Government has announced some programmes like- Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Pradhanmantri Jan Dhan yojna, Aadarsh Gram Yojna, beti padhao, beti bachao yojna – but these all programme are in just nonage stage. General sentiment about some programme like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is that it has become nothing but ‘PR Event’ and yet to bring any positive / behavioral changes in the society. The central government has failed to take strong steps to bring black money. During election, Mr. PM. was very vociferous about bringing back the black money and transferring that money directly to the accounts of every citizens but now people feel that, that  was just a election stunt nothing else.  Recently some controversial issues like- Ghar wapsi, religion conversion, derogatory remarks on minorities , unsolicited advice on population for Hindu-   raked up by either BJP members or its non political allies and because of it, it vitiated the harmonious atmosphere of the society.  The Government yet to act firmly, on these issues. The government is planning to amend ‘Land acquition act’ and the proposed amendment is not in the interest of farmer/ landowner. The last but not the least, it is very irritating to see our prime minister’s over indulgence in local/ assembly election. Sometimes he appears party person more than the prime minister of India.

At present, I am not the member of any political party. Beauty of not being the member of any political party is that you can judge the works/ political decisions of political parties solely on its merit. I have been following the ‘Anna Movement’ and its related news from the beginning. I was very much disappointed when AAP came into being from a pressure group to a political party. Since then, the party has witnessed many vicissitudes.  Despite the all odds, party has a promising prospect. It has got good leaders, transparent work culture and a genuine concerned for common man. As many exit polls have given clear verdict to AAP, the leaders appear (on TV channels) gung-ho about today’s election. My best wishes to the party for the election.
