Are girls safe in our country?

Just now I have come from the mortuary of the general hospital Kurnool. First time in my life I was in mortuary and it was a painful and saddening experience for me. Except doctor, police and medical staff, nobody plans to go mortuary, going there happens unexpectedly and involuntarily. My presence in mortuary was quite unplanned and unexpected.

Before telling further I should inform you that right now I am in Kurnool district for advanced immersion programme. I stay at TTDC guest house at first floor and on ground floor students from disadvantaged section get training under EGMM programme on government expense. In spite of my busy schedule I take out some time to take personality development class for them. I enjoy taking class for them and they also enjoy my company.

It was Sunday yesterday and there was nothing much to do so whole day I read novel and story book. In evening I wanted to see immersion ceremony of lord ganesha so I went outside to catch an auto and go to immersion place. Before I could catch auto, one student told me in broken English “sir, accident, our friend’s sister in hospital”. At first instance, I could not understand anything but from his repeated explanation I understood that one of students’ sister got serious problem and she was in hospital. They were six and along with them I too sat in the auto and went to hospital. After reaching there I came to know that that girl died two hours before in the hospital and her body was taken to the mortuary for post-mortem. Girl’s mother was weeping inconsolably and she had a fits and collapsed on the floor. Everybody was weeping and whole atmosphere was depressing.

How she died? What had happen to her? Was she suffering from any illness? Did she meet with an accident? So many questions were roaming in my mind. I asked one person who was with the deceased family about her death; He said “she has committed suicide sir, she consumed poison in the afternoon” ‘But why’- that was my next question ‘Because she had fight with her mother in the morning ,her father beat her’ ‘But why her mother fought with her, reason’ – ‘her mother wanted her to marry with her brother and she was not willing to marry, moreover she wanted to study further’

Further I came to know that girl was eighteen years old, studying in intermediate. As per tradition her mother wanted her to marry with her brother but she was against of this alliance. On this matter they fought in the morning and in desperation she consumed poison to end her life. Nobody in her family had anticipated that she would take such extreme step for marriage issue.

The brother of the deceased wanted to see her body but mortuary was locked. He met with the person who had key of the mortuary but he was not willing to open it. So they had lengthy discussion in telgu which I could not understand but at the end of the discussion brother paid fifty or sixty rupees to that person to see his sister’s dead body. I went inside the mortuary along with him. Inside scene was horrible. Her dead body was on the surface, room was completely dirty, and everywhere blood strain was there. The foul smell was emanating from the room which was unbearable. I could not stand that smell and after coming from that room I puked. ‘Oh such a scant respect for dead body’- I became depressed.

She committed suicide, was it only for marriage issue? Is the reason of her death is so simple? I do not believe, I do not agree. She died because she wanted to lead her own life; she wanted to take her own decision, she wanted to study further, she wanted to live for herself, she wanted to defy social norms. She knew that if she was alive she would not live according to her own. When she saw no way out she took such a drastic step.

Our society is male dominated orthodox society where personal liberty of women is considered as a sin. Here men have every right to control women’s body, soul, mind everything. In any matter why not it is directly related to women, men have a say but women cannot even open her mouth. Even women sexuality is controlled by men. A girl’s status may change, she may become wife and mother but treatment remains same. If society does not change its attitude towards girls, girls cannot be said safe in our country.

IMMERSION FIELD VISIT OF SERP (from 4th august to 7th august)

IMMERSION FIELD VISIT OF SERP

I always feel field visit a pilgrimage, a special journey to understand the fellow countrymen who are less fortunate, less privileged, to learn from their native wisdom and get the picture of factors which affect their life negatively or positively. SERP or society for elimination of rural poverty, an autonomous society of the department of rural development Andhra Pradesh has been working to ameliorate the condition of the poor through various interventions. As a course curriculum of PGDRDM course, we the NIRD students, Five months back, in march 2010, had gone for field visit to understand the intervention done by the SERP. During that visit we stationed at village for four days and interacted with the self help group (SHG) members to  zila samakhya (ZS) members. As a student our understanding was clear about SERP that this organisation is with the poor, believe in poor’s ability and doing multi dimensional intervention to bring a change in poor’s life.

Recent immersion field visit was different from the earlier one. In this field visit we travelled more than 650 kilometres, stayed three nights at three different places, attended five meeting, saw more than six interventions and interacted with more than 100 people. The 90 hours (from 4th august to 7th august) spent in the field was an enriching experience and every minute of the field visit was a great learning for us.

Self help group is the back bone of community based organisation promoted by SERP. This is the foundation on which four tier structure  self help group (SHG), village organisation(VO),  mandal mahila samakhya(MS) and zila samakhya( ZS) are made. These  community based organisations (CBOS) are instrumental in carrying out the development interventions of Serp.

As per our immersion scheduled, at first we interacted with SHG members of aadarsh at medikonda village. This village come under dharma sagar mandal which is adjacent to Warangal town. There we met with the members of Aadarsh self help group, which was set up in 11 years back. This was a mature SHG with 15 members, saving per month Rs1500/- , got seven times bank linkage ranging from Rs 25,000/- -3, 95,000/-. This SHG is paying Rs 12000/- per month for loan payment. There are various committee such as audit committee, bank linkage committee etc which function under SHG, which take care of concerned components. This SHG prepare its own micro credit plan for all the members in which the needs of SHG member are prioritised, loan amounts are decided and sent to bank or MMS through VO for loan. Every member of this group has taken loan and most of them have utilised the loan amount in income generating activities. Right now they are living comfortably in comparison of five years back.

During meeting of aadarsh SHG, I happen to see one sumitra, member of Shri raj rajeshwar self help group. Thirty two years aged, inter pass sumitra, is a SHG member from last five years. She was the late comer in joining SHG but after joining she took active participation in all the activities of SHG. She took two time big loan one 5,000/- and another 15,000/- rupees and several times small loans. She is working as community resource person (CRP). Recently she was sent to Bihar as an external CRP to assist there in formation of village organisation. She stayed in akour village, benpatti block of khagaria district for one month, imparted training to 15 SHG, each SHG two days training and helped informing two village organisations. When I asked how she feels about it, she said smilingly “development is a contagious process, which happened here it can happen to other place also, I am happy that I helped in mobilising people and worked tirelessly to carry out my responsibility. For this I was paid handsome amount”. There was satisfaction and sense of worth on her face.

Next day we attained the VO as well as MMS meeting at geesgonda. Besides data of VO and MMS we also came to know about the role and responsibility of VO, MMS , their office bearers , responsibility of master book keeper, master trainer, CRP etc. we saw different maintained accounts and other books and interacted with various committees and sub committees and came to know about their responsibilities, their functions and duties. One interesting thing I found there that VO give grade to every SHG on the basis of panch sutra which is informally known as ‘MRSIR’. This panch sutra is:-

 Meeting regularly
 Record maintaining regularly
 Savings without fail
 Internal lending
 Repayment

As per our scheduled we dedicated our two days in understanding the Community based organisation from SHG to ZS and came to know about the resource persons at various level and all about them related to project work. Next two days we utilised in visiting the places where SERP’s interventions are going on. We visited place where education, NPM, health and nutrition, dairy, EGMM, neighbourhood school (managed by MMS) works are going on.

Education

The SHG movement in AP has reached to maturity level where a large number of SHG received the big loan from bank under total financial inclusion. This financial assistance brought a relief in the life of SHG families. But livelihood is just a start to live a dignified life, but to lead a better life it is very important to have quality education and better health. SERP’s intervention in education is a one step forward to realise the cherished dream of poor to live dignified and better life. No children should be deprived of quality education; every child should have access to standard and right kind of education. With this notion SERP has started the concept of ‘Balwadi’, a school of kids age 3-5, which act school less play ground more, a school where traditional kind of teaching is discouraged and teacher herself become kid with kids.

training for balwadi teachers is going on

When we came to know that at balwadi training centre narsempet, balwadi teachers training is going on, we decided to visit the centre. We went there and saw training was in progress. There were 35 participants (teachers) from khammam district, underwent 16 days training from seven trained traininer. These trainer received training of sixteen days at sodhna resource centre. The participants who came to receive training were selected through written and interview and their minimum qualification was matriculation. The training modules emphasise to understand the child psychology, make children learn through game, story, song, drama and different unconventional method. All the 35 participants were taking part actively; they were dancing, prancing, singing, and doing mimicry of different animals. . The participation of trainee teacher was impressive.

                                              Midday meal
Next we went to Education centre at gunjur village of kottugurra mandal. In village we come to know that EC is running in primary school premises. In fact SERP had given Rs10, 000/- for the construction of hut and it was constructed but it is not convenient and safe for student to study under the roof of hut in rainy season. When we reached there, students were having their mid day meal. We stayed there for an hour and chatted with children. Children were chirpy, active and very friendly to teacher. There were 22 intakes of kids in bagwadi and that day 17 was present in the school. The teacher showed us a register in which she maintains the weekly basis the participation of individual students. This school was second home for the children.

Disability

As per rule, only women can be the member of self help group but disable self help group is an exception. In this group, women, men and children who are disable, can become the member of self help group. During this field visit we had an opportunity to visit this kind of group in raghunathpally block. Swayam Krishna mandal viklang samakhya is such kind of block level group (MMS) which has 790 disable members. Out of 790 members 450 are female and rest are male. About 100 members of this group is suffering from multiple disabilities and their disabity percentage range between 90-100 percent. This mandal consists of 37 village organisation and 69 exclusive SHG for disable. These SHGs are directly federated into mandal viklang samakhya. When one member of differently able group was asked “why there is a need of forming special SHG and mandal level organisation when mandal level organisation already exists”, she replied with broad smile “despite of our disabilities we want to be self reliant, we want to find the solution of our problems ourselves”. She informed us that swayam krishi mandal viklang samakhya helps its member in getting physically handicapped certificate, bus pass, train pass, wheel chair, tricycle, artificial limbs and hearing aids. The function of differently able self help group is same as other SHG members. They do saving, internal lending, take loan from bank and VO, prepare macro credit plan and discuss various government scheme. Each member of differently able group save 50/- per month and those members who have no livelihood they also contribute the amount as differently able people get 500/- per month from government. This mandal had received 20 lakhs from DRDA five years back, due to effective management of krishi mandal the corpus is nearly 32 lakhs. DRDA also assist polio members of this mandal by giving 15000/- for operation and other expenditures.

One enthusiastic member of swayam krishi samakhya, saiya sahera, who happens to be a teacher of neighbourhood school, took us to neighbourhood school which is adjacent to samakhya office. This school is opened especially for mentally retarded children age 0-14 and managed by MMS. The objective of this school is to make M R children self reliant so that they could do daily routine work themselves and give them elementary knowledge of mathematics and language. DRDA has given 1 lakh rupees for toys and essential equipments. Two months back when this school was opened, the total strength of student was 25 but now only 10 students come to school regularly. As some of students live far from mandal, they cannot afford transportation charge and in some cases even parents are also uninterested. The class timing of school is 9.30-4.30 and students who attend the school, they get free lunch in the school. This school has got one teacher and one aaya. The teacher gets 1000 /- per month and aaya gets 500/- .

Where disables are considered as a class apart, they get discrimination even in their own home, governments initiatives are like drizzling in scorching sun. In saiya word “we owed a lot as government opened a school and gave me meaning of life by sending me mahboobnagar for exposure visit and making me teacher in the school but government support is needed for long run in order to make every differently able people self reliant”.

The immersion field visit was quite motivational and inspirational. We got a chance to interact with frontline soldiers, real heroes who are taking part in SERP development activities with passion and zeal. Their dedications are really contagious and our motivation to work for rural India has gone one notch up. We are thankful to our organisation that has given us an opportunity to understand its initiatives better on ground level.

Is Rural India Glamorous?

Yesterday I received a phone call from one of my friends. After exchanging pleasantries he asked me “hey man, I have come to know that from last one year you are involved in rural kind of things, do you feel rural India glamorous”? I laughed and ignored his question. I could not fathom from his voice whether he asked this question genuinely or ironically. This friend of mine has been born and brought up in metro and has very little or negligible exposure of rural area. We had together so many nights out, DJ parties and thanks to his affluent dad; we had even access to a famous club of the city. Even though I accompanied him so many times, I felt alien at those places. Anyway it was long back, but his question brought all those memory back at once. “Why did he ask this question to me” I wondered. When I cogitated about it, I found, this is not the question of my friend alone but this is the question of whole ‘urban India’. I must not ignore this question, this question deserve to be replied.

What makes a place glamorous? What is the general sentiment about it? Skyscraper, beautiful buildings, numerous big malls, pub, multiplex, night club, fast life style – lists are endless which make a place glamorous. Those who want to find above mentioned things in rural India they will be  disappointed. Then again it cannot be said that Rural India is devoid of glamour. It has its own glamour, glamour which is completely different from urban area, glamour which is unique, unmatchable and simple but highly attractive.

SHG meeting
Three months back I had an opportunity to stay in a village V. K. R. PuramII of chittor district (A.P.) for five days. First time in my life I saw how self help group function in a village and then attended the meeting of self help group conducted by women of that village. I was burning with curiosity to see how illiterate or semiliterate women conduct the meeting, where they conduct the meeting and when?  I wondered where they would conduct the meeting (because I was told that they did not conduct the meeting in any member’s house) as I did not see any suitable common place in the village where meeting could be conducted. When they will conduct the meeting? As I saw, most of the women were either working in field or in home till 6.30o’clock.  Around 7o’clock evening 15-20 members of SHG group (it was combined meeting of two SHG) came out of their houses and decide to do the meeting on the road near by a house. Once it was decided, they all sat on the dusty and sandy road. They started the meeting with fervent pray which filled the atmosphere with holiness. The road which was looking deserted, forlorn and dead became alive in a jiffy. With the native and homespun wisdom these women discussed financial matter, some social issues and personal problems. The meeting lasted for two hours, during these two hours these women chatted, sang, smiled, laughed, giggled and pour their heart out among themselves. Their divine presence and spirited participation made an ordinary road animate and a happening place. I bet say the glamour which these folk women brought on road by mere presence cannot be matched in any way to any club party or coffee house of the city.

I still remember, in March I was in jhabua district (M.P) for project work for one month. One of my batch mate shayantan was with me. We stayed in a small hotel at meghnagar block. Everything at that place was anyhow manageable but food was a nightmare for me. Food was quiet spicy, oily and tasteless and it was a punishment for my tummy.  I thought why not I should experiment with my body. I made a deal with myself that I would not have spicy food instead I would take fruits and juice only.
Shayantan asked me “but how many days you will be on fruits and juice”
I replied “As much my body can endure”

During those days I was visiting a village named ‘Futtalab’ and interviewing the organic wadi owner. I used to spend whole day in that village. Every household offered me for water and food which I politely refused. After three days in that village a woman approached me and said “I have been observing you from last three days, you do not eat anything, why”? When I explained her about my resolution she got angry at me. “How can a young man live hungry for a whole day” she said. Immediately she brought a glass of milk and almost forced me to drink. Making me drink a glass of milk became her daily routine which she followed till last day of my visit. I wondered why she did that to me. I was a stranger for her. She knew that I would not come back that place again; I would not be any help to her but then also she shown motherly love and affection to me. Now I realise, actually that was the glamour of her life to feed hungry, to take care of stranger without any expectation and self-interest. This glamour of rural life can be seen across the country.

These are the glimpses of glamour associated with rural life. Being a student of Rural Development Management, I am indebted to my institution National institution of Rural Development (NIRD) which has given ample opportunities and exposure to understand the realities, ethos, moral values and glamour of rural India. We had six field visits in a year and each field visit was a pilgrimage for me. During these field visits I had an opportunity to interact with living God in the form of farmers, dalits, disables, old aged people and destitute. Even though they are marginalised people for those who bear ‘biased lens’ but the glitz and glamour of their life can be seen through ‘humanitarian lens’ only. The glamour of their life lies in the fact that despite of all the odds they fight everyday for their existence of life with keeping all the humanitarian values intact.
My motto of writing this article is not to create a debut about Rural Vs Urban or to show the advantage and virtues of rural area over urban area, instead I urge people to see rural area with ‘humanitarian lenses’ so that they can see the realities and glamour without biased mind.

Launch of the book “Devil in pinstripes”

Being the customer of Crossword, I was invited to attend the launching of The Book “Devil in pinstripes” written by Ravi Subramanian. Frankly speaking, First time I heard the name of ‘Ravi Subramanian’.

Who is He? I thought

I must search on internet- I told to myself.

Ravi Subramanian, A graduate from IIM-Bangalore, Working in a foreign bank, author of three books including “Devil in pinstripes”. Earlier novels are If God Was A Banker and I Brought The Monk’s Ferrari. He got Golden Quill Reader’s Choice Award in 2008 for his debut novel If God Was A Banker.

That much information I could gather from internet.

Debut novel and Award winning work. Look impressive.

I should attend the launching ceremony of the book but before that I must read His novels.

I went Banjara hills and purchased If God Was A Banker and read the book in one sitting.

I was disappointed after reading the book. What he has written - trash, nonsense, banal story line. Poor guy, Rich guy, Poor guy introvert, Rich guy extrovert, Poor guy ethical, honest, teetotaller, one woman man, childlike with high integrity and Rich guy unethical, party animal, womaniser , dishonest but an accepted leader among subordinates . It seems Rich guy would be winner but at the end the story Poor guy won with applaud from the entire front, From family, from subordinates, from seniors, from old associates.

There is nothing new in story. Predictable story line.

One of my friends asked me “why are you so critical of this novel”

Why should not I? I replied. I am the reader, I took pain to go to book stall and purchased the book and read it. I invested my time and money, if I am not the judge who will be? Everybody wants his/her investment worthwhile.

But really this novel is not worthwhile to read – I asked this question to myself.

Surprisingly the answer which I found was big NO. Next question came to my mind “why one should go through this book”?

There is no denying the facts that storyline is cliché and characterizations of protagonists are stereotyped but all the characters of the novel I found genuine, real and interesting. The language of novel is lucid, sometimes racy. The larger part of novel is written in dialogue form, during reading I felt as if I was watching a Bollywood movie. It is really a reader’s delight. Moreover this novel tells that ethical values are respected everywhere and the end of the day they are the winner, who take the path of honesty and good ethical values. So this novel has a high entertainment quotient with some universal message.

I recommend all of my friends to go through If God Was A Banker at least one time.

I went to crossword and attainted the launch of “Devil in pinstripes”. The author ‘Ravi Subramanian’ was present there with beatific smile. I found him sophisticated, suave and highly articulate. He was with us for one hour. During this time he answered all enquires, curiosities and questions of readers. During interaction with readers he revealed that he would write two more novels about bank and bankers.

When I asked, how he relate foreign bank with rural India? How rural India is affected by foreign banks? Are you thinking of writing about it? He replied diplomatically - see right now my hands are full with the raw material of bank and bankers story, once I exhaust by this then I may explore some new stuff.

I pleaded with him ‘but these kind of subjects need attention of an author’ .yeh I know, may be after four or five years later- He replied smilingly.

I felt as if I was a disgruntled customer of his bank and he, being manager of the bank pretending to pacify me or taking care of my complain.

Now “Devil in pinstripes” is in my hand and I am looking forward to finishing this book in this week.

Ravi, I like your writing style. It’s original and it’s yours. You love writing that I can fathom after meeting with you. But Ravi, why you confine yourself only Bank, remember there is a world beyond Bank and Bankers, explore new horizon and write some mesmerizing , awesome story so that reader can remember you for long.

My good wishes are always with you.

Social change maker II

The $64000 dollar question is what a person needs to become a social change maker- Lots of money, high IQ more than 120 or a large number of followers or a high social status. I do not know how much these parameters influence but one thing is of paramount importance to become the social change maker i.e. empathy for the suffering human being and indomitable zeal to serve the society. There are many examples in the society, when a person succeeded to change the society not because of money or intelligence but because of sheer determination. This change could be macro level or micro level.

I have a simple example of eighteen years old, BSC. I part student Ramesh of my neighbouring village. That village has a middle primary school with 70 students and two teachers. Like almost other government school of our country, this school had everything proper and prim on paper. Generally one teacher used to come every day in the school other would do government /office or home work (?). Teacher beat students because they were weak in studies and would not complete homework on time. The parents of students, who are generally labourer and farmer, felt that teaching cannot exist without beating of students. Ramesh always felt bad about it and talked with teachers but to no avail. When he complained to village school monitoring committee about the physical punishment of students, committee member shared the same view as of the parents of students. He was disappointed but not discouraged. He started teaching students free of cost for two hours early in the morning. His unconventional method of teaching attracted the students and learning for them became just like fun, at the same time parents of students as well as teachers of the school also realised that beating the student is not a part of learning and teaching. The condition of school changed drastically. Teachers started coming on time without fail and students were treated well. Thanks to Ramesh intervention, School is functioning well.

Now question comes, why Ramesh was so much concerned about school and students? Why he started teaching student free of cost? Reasons are simple; he was unable to see the suffering of students by the hands of teachers. He really wanted to see the change in school and he did his level best to do so and got the positive results.

Now again question arises in my mind how many young bloods have that kind of sense of responsibility towards society as Ramesh has.

                                                               continue.....for next day...................

Social change maker

Whenever I think of life, I wonder why we are on this earth. What is the purpose of existence? What is the role of each one of us in this world? These questions are cliché but every individual ask these to himself one day or some day. Questions become more complex whenever I ponder over it. Whenever I look back, I feel strong dissatisfaction, regret and sadness. I feel I have not done any extraordinary work so that people will remember me. Yeh it’s true that like other average ambitious human being I also want to love people, want to be loved by the people and want to be remembered by the fellow citizen as a good human being who worked tirelessly to uplift the society.

In my opinion the most productive, fertile period of life is 18- 24 years. This is the age group, when an individual’s mind is alert, concentration is high, body is fit and creativity is at zenith. Human history is full of the examples when this age group individual took the lead and changed the thinking of society. Take the example of derozio, at the age of 21; he became the lecturers of Hindu college Calcutta. Through his rational thinking, he inspired a group of student to think independently which played a key role in Bengal renaissance. Bhagat singh was just 23 years old when he was hanged. At the age of 18 Sharat Chandra chattopadhay wrote “devdas” which is a world famous novel. Dharamveer bharti wrote evergreen classic “gunaho ka devta” when he was 22 years old. Above examples shows that even at early stage of youth an individual can become the society change maker.
