Launch of the book “Devil in pinstripes”

Being the customer of Crossword, I was invited to attend the launching of The Book “Devil in pinstripes” written by Ravi Subramanian. Frankly speaking, First time I heard the name of ‘Ravi Subramanian’.

Who is He? I thought

I must search on internet- I told to myself.

Ravi Subramanian, A graduate from IIM-Bangalore, Working in a foreign bank, author of three books including “Devil in pinstripes”. Earlier novels are If God Was A Banker and I Brought The Monk’s Ferrari. He got Golden Quill Reader’s Choice Award in 2008 for his debut novel If God Was A Banker.

That much information I could gather from internet.

Debut novel and Award winning work. Look impressive.

I should attend the launching ceremony of the book but before that I must read His novels.

I went Banjara hills and purchased If God Was A Banker and read the book in one sitting.

I was disappointed after reading the book. What he has written - trash, nonsense, banal story line. Poor guy, Rich guy, Poor guy introvert, Rich guy extrovert, Poor guy ethical, honest, teetotaller, one woman man, childlike with high integrity and Rich guy unethical, party animal, womaniser , dishonest but an accepted leader among subordinates . It seems Rich guy would be winner but at the end the story Poor guy won with applaud from the entire front, From family, from subordinates, from seniors, from old associates.

There is nothing new in story. Predictable story line.

One of my friends asked me “why are you so critical of this novel”

Why should not I? I replied. I am the reader, I took pain to go to book stall and purchased the book and read it. I invested my time and money, if I am not the judge who will be? Everybody wants his/her investment worthwhile.

But really this novel is not worthwhile to read – I asked this question to myself.

Surprisingly the answer which I found was big NO. Next question came to my mind “why one should go through this book”?

There is no denying the facts that storyline is cliché and characterizations of protagonists are stereotyped but all the characters of the novel I found genuine, real and interesting. The language of novel is lucid, sometimes racy. The larger part of novel is written in dialogue form, during reading I felt as if I was watching a Bollywood movie. It is really a reader’s delight. Moreover this novel tells that ethical values are respected everywhere and the end of the day they are the winner, who take the path of honesty and good ethical values. So this novel has a high entertainment quotient with some universal message.

I recommend all of my friends to go through If God Was A Banker at least one time.

I went to crossword and attainted the launch of “Devil in pinstripes”. The author ‘Ravi Subramanian’ was present there with beatific smile. I found him sophisticated, suave and highly articulate. He was with us for one hour. During this time he answered all enquires, curiosities and questions of readers. During interaction with readers he revealed that he would write two more novels about bank and bankers.

When I asked, how he relate foreign bank with rural India? How rural India is affected by foreign banks? Are you thinking of writing about it? He replied diplomatically - see right now my hands are full with the raw material of bank and bankers story, once I exhaust by this then I may explore some new stuff.

I pleaded with him ‘but these kind of subjects need attention of an author’ .yeh I know, may be after four or five years later- He replied smilingly.

I felt as if I was a disgruntled customer of his bank and he, being manager of the bank pretending to pacify me or taking care of my complain.

Now “Devil in pinstripes” is in my hand and I am looking forward to finishing this book in this week.

Ravi, I like your writing style. It’s original and it’s yours. You love writing that I can fathom after meeting with you. But Ravi, why you confine yourself only Bank, remember there is a world beyond Bank and Bankers, explore new horizon and write some mesmerizing , awesome story so that reader can remember you for long.

My good wishes are always with you.
